5 Wakesurfing Tips for Beginners

Ready to get on the lake this season?

Finding more time on your hands with the quarantine?

Now is a great time to learn a new sport behind your boat, and wakesurfing is a great one to try! Many people love that wakesurfing is much gentler on your joints, making it ideal of all ages and fitness levels. At Buxton Marine – the #1 Nautique dealer in the country – we sell many boats designed to create the perfect wake. Whether you get behind the 2014 Nautique G23 for sale in Lewisville or another boat, Buxton Marine offers these tips for beginners:

1.    Don’t Force Yourself Up

There is a tendency by beginning wakesurfers to want to muscle their way up out of the water. You don’t need to do that! Just as wakeboarders and skiers use the water and boat to pull them up, the same is true for wakesurfing. You will start with your heels resting on the board, and as the boat starts, the motion will pop the board up to wear it is on your feet. You will then gradually feel the water, gain balance, and surf! Let the water do the work!

2.    Know How to Accelerate and Decelerate

As you get more comfortable on the water, you’ll want to take control of maneuvering your board around. This involves using the front and back of the board as “pedals.” If you want to speed up, then put on the gas by pressing down on the front of the board. If you want to slow down, then press down on the back of the board. It takes practice, but over time you will get better! If you purchase a 2014 Nautique G23 for sale in Lewisville, then you’ll be able to use the ballast to create awesome wakes to practice on!

3.    Choose a Front Foot

Speaking of foot placement, which foot toward feels more comfortable? Most right handed people will say their left foot forward feels right, and this is considered “regular foot.” If you ride with your right foot forward, then that is considered a “goofy foot.” Either way, you’ll want to pick a side where your face is facing the wake, as that is where you will be more comfortable.

4.    Find the Sweet Spot

The sweet spot for wakesurfing is the magical zone about 4-5 feet off the back of the boat. Here, you can use the boats wake to propel you along and surf as long as you like without a rope. Practice accelerating and decelerating to maintain position.

5.    Start Slow

Wakesurfing takes time to perfect. As you’re getting started, remember that the slower the boat, the easier it is for you to actually get up and balanced. Boaters will tell you a rider should be pulled at 10 mph, but remember, that’s a peak speed and you can start slower than that.
