5 Wakesurf Mistakes to Avoid – Buxton Marine Lewisville

Whether you’re cruising on Lake Lewisville or making waves at Cedar Creek Lake, you can rest assured that your brand new Nautique boat is built for fun.And you know what’s fun: wakesurfing! If you’re new to wakesurfing, here are 5 common wakesurf mistakes to avoid:

  1. Don’t Go too Fast

When wakesurfing, the boat doesn’t need to be going as fast as it does when you’re wakeboarding, skiing, or pulling a tube. While wakeboarders generally wakeboard at higher speeds (as do skiers), you’ll want to ask your driver to keep the boat around 10 mph – maybe even more like 9 mph depending on your skill.

  1. Don’t Try to Stand Up Too Soon

Here’s another one of our common wakesurf mistakes to avoid: standing too soon. Before the boat accelerates, just lay back in the water and relax. The back of your heels will be resting on the board and you’ll be holding onto the rope. As the boat begins to pull you up, you’ll feel the board come toward your feet and your feet begin to stand on the board at the same time. Resist the urge to stand too soon. Remain squatted with feet a comfortable distance apart until you’re fully balanced on the board.

  1. Don’t Get the Wrong Gear

Don’t assume that your wakeboard or ski rope is going to work well for wakesurfing too. Wakesurf ropes are generally shorter, have knots to pull and hold on to, and are made to maximize the ride. Likewise, look into getting a decent wakesurf board that will make wakesurfing easier for a beginner than if you attempt to use a regular surf board.

  1. Don’t Hold Onto the Rope the Whole Time

Once you’ve got your balance and feel some slack in the rope, it’s time to give real surfing a shot! Don’t be afraid to throw the rope back into the boat once you feel comfortable; the wake will propel you!

  1. Don’t Give Up!

If you don’t get the hang of it the first time, one of the biggest wakesurf mistakes you can make is to give up! Watersports enthusiasts of all ages love wakesurfing because it’s easy on your body and easy to keep giving it a try without hurting yourself.
