How to Improve Your Wakesurf Game

The lake is less crowded and it’s still blazin’ hot in Texas, so it’s the perfect time to get out on the lake!

Whether you’re sporting a brand new Nautique, pre-owned Nautique, or another luxury boat like MasterCraft, Tige, or Supra, chances are you enjoy a little time wakesurfing too. If you’re interested in improving your wakesurf game, here are a few pointers from the boating experts at Buxton Marine - the #1 boat dealer in North Texas:

Don’t Force It.

Many beginner riders try to force themselves up on the board, but that will only sink it. Instead, rest your heels on the board gently, and as the boat accelerates, feel the boat lift and press the board against your heels. Use the momentum of the boat to get up, just as you would with skiing or wakeboarding.

Shuffle Your Weight.

The key to staying up on a surfboard is knowing how to shuffle your weight from front to back. Press your front foot down to “go,” and press your back foot down to “decelerate.” As you get better at wakesurfing, the shifting will become second nature. This is the heart of learning tricks on a board.

Get the Best Wave Possible.

If you’ve got a Nautique, then you’ve got a ballast – and you should use it! Fill the ballast up and shift all weight from riders to the side of the boat the surfer will be surfing on to maximize the wake.

Use the Rope as Your Guide.

There is no shame in holding the rope while wakesurfing! Don’t throw it until you’ve maneuvered to the sweet spot, just 4-5 ft. behind the boat, and feel confident in your footing.

Master these basics and you’re on your way to better wakesurfing in no time! As always, Buxton Marine is here with all your wakesurf needs, with accessories and boards galore in our Buxton Marine Pro Shop in Lewisville, Texas.
