Lewisville Boat Maintenance: 4 Tips to Help Your Engine Last Longer

Most boat owners consider their boat – whether it’s a Nautique, MasterCraft, Supra, Tige, etc. – to be a valuable asset. And with the investment, comes the inevitable Lewisville boat maintenance. Many customers at Buxton Marine ask us if routine maintenance is necessary, and the answer is certainly yes. It extends the life of your boat and helps your engine last longer. However, there are some simple things you can do on your own to prolong the life of your boat engine:

Get Out on the Lake!

This is an easy one! Sure, you might have seasons when it’s more difficult to do so, but running the engine is an essential – and simple – way to extend the life of your engine. When an engine sits cold for too long, the oil and lubricant drains off of the components, making everything a little sluggish. Just get out to the lake on a regular basis, and your engine will thank you.

Ease into It

We’re all in a hurry to get out on the lake, but be sure to idle your engine for a few minutes after cranking it to help the oil warm up. Warming the oil helps the engine run more smoothly, without any stress on the components. If you throttle it too soon while the engine is still cold, it just creates more stress that could leave lasting effects.

Plan to Cruise the Lake

When your Nautique boat is in cruising speed, it’s in its sweet spot. The engine isn’t the least bit taxed and everything is humming along perfectly. When you spend an extended amount of time at full throttle, you may not immediately notice any effects because the hours of boat use are unaffected. However, it’s just common sense that hours on the lake that are at higher RPMs are going to produce more stress on the engine than hours that are at cruising speed. Your boat is designed to take the higher RPMs, just make sure you're balancing that with time cruising.

Flush the Engine

We know it’s a pain, but routine Lewisville boat maintenance includes flushing the engine after each day out on the lake. This avoids corrosion from deposits in the water and helps keep everything clean. Have more questions about Lewisville boat maintenance? Give Buxton Marine in Lewisville, Texas a call today!
