Who Needs to take a Boater Education Course in Texas?

Who Can Operate a Vessel Alone?

Per the Texas Parks & Wildlife website, the following people may operate a vessel alone in the State of Texas:

  • Born on or after 9/1/13 and has passed a boater education course.
  • Is 18 years old and can lawfully operate the boat.
  • Is 13 years old and has completed a boater education course (applies to personal watercrafts only). 

What Certifications Do I Need to Carry On Board the Boat?

If you’re driving the boat, it’s a good idea to have a government issued picture ID on board, as well as any necessary boater education certifications. 

How Does Someone Complete a Boater Education Course?

It’s really simple! There are several ways to do this online and easily print a certification out afterward. You can also attend a course in-person.

What are the Rules about Alcohol On Board a Boat?

Open containers are allowed by Texas law, but the boat operator is subject to intoxication laws, as with driving a motor vehicle. Passengers may also be subject to these laws. Most boating fatalities are caused by drunk boating, so don’t drink and drive.
