5 Tips to Prevent Wakeboarding Injuries
Time on the lake is always fun. At Buxton Marine, located in Lewisville, Texas, we know how enjoyable it is to invite friends and family out and all the fun you can have together. However, not everyone knows the rules and how to stay safe, especially while wakeboarding.
1 - Wear a Helmet
It may come without saying, but when you’re going fast and you accidentally wipeout and hit the water it can be painful and potentially damaging to your body. Wearing a water friendly helmet can help to prevent traumatic injuries. We know it’s not always the most attractive looking accessory, but your safety is more important than how you look.
2 - Bend Your Knees
Common injuries sustained while wakeboarding are usually to the knees. This usually happens to riders who buckle their knees or stand with their legs too straight. To prevent this, make sure your knees are just slightly bent at all times. If you have ever undergone knee surgery or had a severe injury in the past, it would be a good idea to talk with your doctor before attempting wakeboarding to make sure you can handle it and don’t reinjure anything.
3 - Concentrate
We feel like it comes without saying, but you should concentrate on your body and your movements while wakeboarding. The lake is beautiful, and it is easy to be distracted by scenery or other boats, but stay focused! This will allow you to anticipate bumps and better your chances of staying upright.
4 - Say ‘No’ to Wakeboarding at Dusk
Once the sun starts to set, it’s a good idea to stop wakeboarding and other water sports. The lake is beautiful in the evening, so just enjoy it. Wakeboarding without enough light may sound like an exciting challenge to conquer, but the truth is the lack of sunlight makes it very difficult to see obstacles that might creep up on you in the water.
5 - Stay Active
Honestly, one of the best ways to prevent a wakeboarding injury is to keep your body active and in shape. The better muscle and control you have over your body on land, the better you will fare on the water. Keep exercising and staying in shape year round, and you won’t have to worry about this one.
