Boating in the Winter? Follow These Tips for Safety
Many people use the winter to store their nautique boat or use the time for maintenance. However, there are still plenty of reasons to enjoy your boat in the winter, especially in warmer climates. Of course you need to pay attention to the weather and water conditions, but with the proper safety features in place you an enjoy your boat all winter long.
Boat Condition
Never take an unregistered boat or a boat that is in subpar condition out in the water, especially in the winter. If the boat starts to sink or strands you in the middle of a body of water, you are at the mercy of your safety devices and those around you.
Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
Even when the weather is warm you want to keep your PFD on, but especially when it is close. If, for some reason, you end up stranded in the water, you are much more likely to survive if your PFD is on, secure, and fitting correctly.
Bring Friends
It is always a good idea to have someone with you in case of an emergency. Another person can help if there is a problem or call for help if you are unable to. If you do not bring anyone with you, make sure somebody knows where you are and when you plan to be back.
Cold Weather Gear
It may benefit you to wear a wet suit to stay warm, especially if you plan to get in the water. It is also a good idea to have multiple pairs of gloves. If you are fishing and one gets wet, you have a backup! Another way to keep warm is to use hand and toe warmers to keep your appendages toasty.
Cover Your Face and Eyes
When boating in the winter the wind can be very cold. It is important to cover you face and eyes. Sunglasses will work in a pinch, but ski goggles would work really well, especially when the boat is moving fast. A ski mask will work to cover the rest of your face.
Don't Take Chances
You need to consider your abilities, the time of day, the weather conditions, and water conditions. Think through all the pieces of your boating trip and how you would mitigate a problem that arose. If you accidentally steered into some rocks and you don’t have a plan in place, you may be stuck for quite a while.
